My name is CamiAnn and I’m 53 years old and still going strong! I may not be a famous model…not just yet anyway ;)…but I have managed, in my own way, to hopefully be an inspiration for real women of all ages, sizes, and types in the modeling world. I am a working woman and hold down a full-time job and have been through a lot of personal challenges that life has thrown my way over the years, but nothing kept me from pursuing the passion and dream of modeling I have had since I was a young girl.

While I was in my 20′s and 30′s, other things in life happened, along with marriage, divorce, and other family issues, so any dreams of modeling I had were put on hold. Also, remember, back when I was a teen and young adult, it was not as “in” to be ethnic or different (I am half-Japanese and half-British) as you had to be a certain “type” to fit in back then, and we also didn’t even have computers or the internet, which has made a huge difference in the modeling world now.

In 2004, while living in Scottsdale, AZ, at the age of 45 years old and after a bad breakup with a long-time boyfriend, I pulled myself together and boldly entered the world of modeling at a time when most women are leaving the business. It all started on a whim with just one picture an amateur friend took that was posted on an online portfolio site. Little did I know where that one picture would lead. I was lucky enough to have been contacted by a really great photographer from that site and he turned out to be a wonderful mentor who helped me network and introduced me to the right photographers and models who were kind enough to teach me a lot of very valuable lessons about the industry…I am still friends with many of these people and will never forget how generous they were and still are.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think it was possible for a woman my age to have gotten as far as I have, but I have my parents (R.I.P.) to thank for my exotic looks and great genetics that keep me looking and feeling younger than my chronological age or so I have been told, something that I never take for granted. Living a “clean life”, eating right, (with the occasional cheating with a cheeseburger or cupcakes or whatever I might crave. Everything in moderation is my motto) working out with cardio and weights 3 to 4 times a week, Bikram yoga to keep limber and lean, and just keeping active are extremely important to me and are also things that keep me on my toes in this extremely competitive industry.

Now in 2012, and living in the Las Vegas area, at age 53, I am humble and grateful that I have been able to still pursue my dreams and over the last 8 years, I have had the honor and pleasure of working with more than 50 photographers from all over the world and I have no plans to stop anytime soon, and with the help of new friends who are turning out to be just as kind and generous with their time and advice, I have gotten that extra boost that keeps me going and the encouragement to never give up trying!

There are many people in the industry and just people in general who say women over 40 or 50 should dress “age appropriate” or wear their hair a certain way and only shoot lifestyle or do the working mom or grandmother type images. While there is nothing wrong with doing those kind of shoots, what does that really mean? Do we have to cover everything up and wear only certain clothing and be more “modest” all of the time? We can’t wear lingerie or bikinis or even be appreciated for our nude bodies? That we can’t be SEXY anymore? I say NO to all of that! Sure you don’t want to look like a teenage girl or a woman in her 20’s out at the club, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still be sexy, flirty, and even show a little skin. After all, we don’t stop having sex after 50 do we?

It’s absurd to think that a woman over 50 can’t be just as sexy as any other woman. Yes, our bodies are different at all ages, but that’s just part of life and you don’t just stop living your life just because you are getting older, so make the most of what your best assets are and use those in your favor. These days, women are taking better care of themselves and staying in shape and thanks to little things like Botox or the right skin care and even plastic surgery to an extent, women 50 and older are looking better than ever. Taking good care of your skin (using spray tans instead of spending too much time out in the sun), using the right products for your skin type, your hair, taking care of your eyes, teeth, and overall taking pride in your general health are musts, but that goes for everyone and not just models.

What we do have in our favor is that with age comes wisdom and with wisdom comes the confidence that we might have not had earlier in life and a passion for life that younger models may not quite possess just yet, which some say, shows in our pictures through our eyes and how we connect with the camera. We have lived life and we put our souls into our work and that is what shines through to bring more depth and character to our photographs. It also brings on the ability to believe in yourself, to stop comparing yourself to anyone other woman and allows you to accept your body and who you are and the way you look, because we are all unique and that’s just fabulous! Anything is possible if you just get out of your own way and allow it to happen.

These days women are called to walk a path that was once unavailable to us. Now is the time to pave the path for us and those women who come after us. We must take the lead and risks to make this happen and I am more than happy to take those steps to keep the door open for “mature” models.

My favorite quote, which always keeps me inspired:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us and often those close to us. We ask ourselves ‘who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to manifest the glory of God that is in us. It’s not just in some people; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”  –Marianne Williamson

It is my hope that others in the industry and in the world will also come to realize that age holds no barrier to beauty and that all women, regardless of age, race, height, weight, or anything else still have the capability of being sexy, smart, vibrant and beautiful in their own way and there is a place in this industry for every kind of woman! After all if we all looked the same, this world would be kind of boring wouldn’t it? Embrace who you are and never give up your dreams!

Also, a big thank you to FemmeXposure® for the honor of allowing this 50+ year-old woman to tell my story and sharing some of my pictures on their fantastic site! xoxo,
